The flavor is a little milder than I remember American animal crackers being, and the level of detail in the texture is traded in for a much greater variety of animal shapes in the Japanese brand of crackers we get. But the real reason I love Japanese animal crackers is that they are printed with English animal words! From "Squirrel" to "Peahen" I'm in heaven!
I wonder what other language learning snack foods are out there...
I remember a certain breakfast cereal called Alphabits that my little sister and I used to get when we were growing up. I don't remember seeing those recently. But Japan supermarkets don't have a whole lot of variety in breakfast cereals anyway.
Also, this is sometimes not kid-appropriate as far as language goes, but it can be pretty entertaining for adults. These two comedians pick a snack, eat a snack and rate a snack every week. Here's the link to their animal crackers episode: Mike and Tom Eat Snacks
Actually, now that I take a closer look, they may no longer be updating this site... but you can listen to the one about animal crackers anyway.
ok... just re-listening to the episode of MATES I posted above and it is SOOONOTAPPROPRIATE for kids-- and probably will be offensive to a lot of adults. But it's funny in spots. And it's vaguely related to the animal crackers concept.
