This week was pretty good.
Older child: Read 4 times. Wrote 0 times. I decided to bribe her. I offered her a substantial amount of money (3 weeks of allowance) if she reads a chapter book in ml within 2 weeks. This offer being good for 5 books. My theory is that she never reads fast enough to get into the stories. So if I can get her to read about 600-700 pages within a short period of time, she’ll get hooked just like she did with ML. So she’s been pretty good about reading. Her first deadline is this Friday and she seems on track to finish.
Younger child: Read every day (7 times), wrote once. She seems to have really gotten into reading. It’s still predominantly in the car, but since we go to school and back every day, she finds the time to read. To balance the bribery for older sister I offered her a per chapter payment until the end of the book. Not as much, but enough to make it seem fair. However it seems whatever motivation she has, it’s internal. She seems to thrive on beating her own record. When she started her (way too high level) book she could read a page on the way to school. Today she read 4. Yesterday she was so into it, she read 9 pages. In fact I would say she’s almost up to the point where she reads as much per day as her sister. It just takes her longer.
The two of them also seem to have established an uneasy truce about reading in the car. The morning drive is prime time that is valued higher. Yet on Thursday they (in anger and spite) read simultaneously. Older one at a whisper and the younger one quieter than normal. The following day they agreed that this works for them, so they voluntarily shared the morning. I can’t say that my ears are loving it, but I do love the fact that they aren't fighting over who gets to read. I hope the car reading becomes a sustainable habit. Although I hope it’ll becomes quiet reading with time.
