Graham, welcome! We look forward to hearing the happy news of your firstborn's arrival this spring! (Feel free to share a photo at the New Babies! board, if you like.)
In another thread, I learned that your wife's English ability is strong, so it seems to me if you both are proactive, from early on, about providing the child with ample exposure to English (your wife might use German when alone with the child then switch to English when the three of you are together), you'll surely experience a lot of satisfying progress toward your bilingual goal.
And though I've never been to Germany, we've had several high school students from Hannover (a sister city of Hiroshima) visit us for homestays and their English was quite good, even though they grew up in a solely German-speaking household. So I suspect that the German school system, and society at large, will also be a helpful force in your child's bilingual development.
Plus, the proximity of Germany to England is another key factor in your favor.
So, with these many advantageous conditions (including your personal passion for this aim), I think your little one has a big, bright bilingual (even multilingual) future!

Mayken: Hey Adam Beck, how come your photo on that list is bigger than everyone else's?

Adam Beck: Mayken, I don't know, but I wish I could say it's because I'm taller! My son (almost 12) is now nearly as tall as I am. Just yesterday I told him that I have to start growing again!

Mayken: Adam Beck, thanks for sharing the impressions of your trip to China! I love those duck boats and that doorway! And meeting those kids wanting to speak English with you is so amazing!(I won't enter the giveaway because I'm afraid of winning the chicken claws!)

Amy: Bless!! how cute is that!!! Reminds me of a similar thing that happened with my youngest when she was 18 months: she said the sound right for every animal but the cow. She kept answering "Lola" because of a famous Spanish nursery rhyme about a cow!

Alba: My son caught us by surprise when we said thank you (in English) to a waiter in a Mexican restaurant, and he said "gracias" (thank you) to him too in Spanish, also signing it! He was having a blast and there was some Spanish music in the background.

Adam Beck: Sounds like a wonderful moment, Alba!
