My goal is to teach my son (who is now 16 mo) English.
We live in Italy and I'm the only English speaking person around, plus Peppa Pig (we have a Peppa Pig craze over here so I bought the DVD's in English).
I started my journey on the 1st of September with a half an hour a day of English time plus cartoons.
I tried reading to him the same books I read in Italian, but he associated the pictures with Italian so it wasn't efficient.
I found on the internet free printables with farm animals, wild animals, cars and different times of food, printed them and glued them on thick paper. These were new images for words he already knew but he didn't name them in Italian, he listened to me name them in English.
Now he repeats some of the words after I name them. His favorite words are "car", "truck", "ship" and "duck".
You could also play English nursery rhymes while he plays...just another option to have English in the background... Isn't it amazing how Peppa Pig is just everywhere! We did the same here in Australia--bought the DVDs in French minority language. I find it works well as at least my daughters can still get excited about the same characters that their English speaking friends are talking about.
Over on another thread Annamari suggested getting a soft toy/puppet who only speaks the minority language...I thought it was a great idea and will do it for my girls.

Mayken: On the train from Paris to Cologne we sat next to another ml mother and daughter from our school! Only noticed when almost in Cologne. It's a small ML-ml world!

Amy: Got fleeting impression during Skype call with daughter on holiday at grandparents' in ml1 country, that her ml1 pronunciation has improved! She even seemed more confident speaking in ml2!
