How do you increase vocabulary?

I'm curious how others increase vocabulary in the ml language. Do you just read books, speak, play games, let them watch cartoons so it comes naturally or do you try adding flash cards as well to help speed it up?
My daughter was a lot more willing to sit and do flash cards, actually listen and remember them. My son is different. He doesn't focus as well, nor does he have the same memory as my daughter (tell her once and she will remember FOREVER!). He's making good progress in speaking the ml language. He's able to speak sentences, but has a limited vocabulary. I was hoping to speed it up with flash cards, but after a couple tries (and then him being sick with fever again for two days) I’m wondering if I should just leave it at the au pair speaking with him, reading books, and playing games.
Yesterday we played "memory" together and every time a card was flipped the au pair would say what the card was. I bought a nature memory card set, so words like tree, flowers, butterfly etc. Some words he already knew, but new words I don’t even think he was paying attention. He would repeat the words after she said them, but if we landed on the card again, he would say “I don’t know” in French. So my question is, do you think it’s better just to relax on flash cards and let it come naturally because all children are different and what might work for my daughter might not work for him? Or is it not fair that I put more effort for her, because I do remember at the start it was a little difficult to get the ball rolling, but once she got into it, it became a lot easier. In case someone new is reading this, my background story is we are an English speaking family who send our children to French bilingual school. We have a French au pair to help support the language exposure.
