Hello friends, my name is Shuo. I'm originally from China and now live in Mexico. I'm married to a Mexico born Japanese but my husband is the third generation of the Japanese so he can't speak Japanese but speaks Spanish like any other native Mexican. When we first met, we spoke in English but now my Spanish is good enough for daily conversations, so we talk 80% Spanish and 20% English. He can only understand some basic Chinese words.
We have a little boy who is 1 year old. And he's been going to day care since 5 months old. Every morning we drop him off at 7:30 and pick him up at 4pm and I think it has to be like this for a long time since I work part-time and no one else can help me out with the little one.
We live in a little town in Mexico. You can barely see any Asian on the street, let alone hearing Chinese. I'm literally the only person speaking Chinese to my son and I'm trying to only speak Chinese, although I sing to him in Chinese, English and Spanish.
I have a Chinese friend here who is also married to a Mexican. Her Spanish is good but not perfect but for all these years (her son is 10 years old now), she's been speaking Spanish instead of Chinese to him because she feels uncomfortable speaking Chinese to her boy in front of others.
It might be a little too early to be preoccupied but I'm really wondering if my son can eventually become bilingual or even biliterate (it's one thing to speak Chinese and another to write). I mean should I be satisfied just with him understanding me or he should he be able to speak Chinese also? If I push it too much, would he at the end resent the language or even resent me?
And is there any good way or toy that could help my son pick up my language faster? Well, we can't afford a Chinese-speaking nanny or traveling frequently to China.
What I have just written seems a little disorganized. Hope you don't mind.
