I'm passing on information about a course that may be of interest. If you hurry, and register before it begins on July 3, you can access it for free during the length of the course (plus 14 days). Otherwise, to view it at a later date, the cost is $54.
The British Council and FutureLearn explore the best ways for young children to learn English in a free online course
English in Early Childhood: Language Learning and Development starts on July 3, 2017 and will investigate aspects of early childhood learning and development, including how young children learn English.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
● Investigate how children learn and how they acquire language;
● Reflect on ways to communicate effectively with young children;
● Demonstrate the connection between learning and a child’s well-being;
● Discuss the importance of play and look at language development opportunities;
● Identify ways to support and challenge children, and measure their progress.
Sheona Gilmour, lead educator on the course from the British Council, said: “A vital part of our philosophy is that learning continues at home, and whilst our apps were helping us deliver this promise, we wanted to provide more support to parents and early years’ educators in helping their children to learn English. The course brings together this unique audience of parents and teachers that reflects an undeniably globalised world. There are fascinating discussions from around the world with all sorts of different contexts; multilingual children, silent periods, progress, and other common issues that connect us all. Everyone shares their own personal experience and perspective; this is how we envision learning, as a collaborative process.”
Mark Lester, Director of Partnership Development at FutureLearn, said: “In today’s multicultural classrooms, where many languages and backgrounds are merging, it’s important to understand how to best support children to develop and grow. The FutureLearn platform encourages a global community of parents and educators to share their wide range of views and experiences, while benefitting from the British Council’s years of knowledge and expertise.”
As with all FutureLearn courses, the course can be taken for free or there is the option to upgrade to receive additional benefits.
