Hello everyone,
I am very excited and inspired to connect with this community of like-minded parents (my heartfelt thanks to Adam for starting this forum and the blog!).
I grew up in Canada speaking French at home in an English part of the country and now I live in California with my American husband and 6-year-old daughter. I'd like my daughter to be fully French/English bilingual since half of my family lives in France, but my husband speaks very little French (although is very supportive of our daughter being multilingual) so most exposure to the ml comes from me, various books, and videos. I tried a stint running a once-a-week French class, but that is A LOT of work (my daughter loved it though!) and after taking a one year hiatus I might resurrect it as a French story time. We have the good fortune of having a very good bilingual English-Spanish public school here, so my daughter is just finishing her Kindergarten year and getting all the benefits of being in a multilingual-friendly environment.
What I really need now (and am always looking for more) are specific recommendations for books and other resources in French. Adam has done a great job providing those for English ml (and I've used many of these as ML resources--we love our now-dog-earred copies of Zita the Spacegirl, and my 8-year-old nephew thought the Amulet series was the bomb). So, as soon as I finish this intro, I think I'll skip over to the Resources for French as ml thread and add the book gems we've found, as well as video, and music (and I'm hoping others can keep adding to the thread).
Thank you to all of you who are contributing to this forum. Not all parents are willing to promote a minority language (no judgement from my end) and fostering another language takes persistence, patience and ingenuity--power to you all, our children will thank us for it (I know I thank my parents for my English-French upbringing even if I didn't appreciate it when I was growing up).
