Hi Everyone!
I'm very happy to join the forum and get some insights from other parents raising bilingual and trilingual kids.
I'm Donatella and I was raised bilingual myself in Spain. My mom is Italian (hence the name) but I grew up in Madrid, Spain so my ML is Spanish. My husband, Marco also was raised bilingual, his mom is American from LA but he grew up in Italy so his ML is Italian. We met in NYC where we live and have two kids, Olivia who will turn 3 in two months and Arturo who is 8 months.
I first learned about bilingual kids around 3.5 years ago when I was pregnant and researching how to raise bilingual kids. I read everywhere that we should push the minority languages (Spanish and Italian) as much as we could before the kids were in school since after they would not want to speak it as much. We did just that and my daughter speaks beautifully in Spanish, her vocabulary is impressive for a two year old. We hired a Spanish speaking nanny, she watches Spanish or Italian TV and we read A LOT in our languages... I was so proud of myself that she could communicate with my family in Spanish when we traveled home. I though "she's so good with languages" but then, she joined preschool...and the majority language (English) was introduced.
She started school in September of last year but she's still not speaking more than a few words of English. I guess she's not as good with languages as I thought... She now refuses to hear even one word of English coming out of my or my husband's mouth and really dislikes going to preschool since she is not interacting with the other kids. I will start a new thread asking everyone's opinion but that's my journey so far.
Nice to e-meet you all!
