I have 4 children and feel like I haven't provided them with as much ml exposure as necessary for my goals/aspirations for my children's ml development. I have been coming up with a plan to reshape our environment and my efforts to allow them the exposure and motivation needed to thrive in their ml development. I took a lot of my inspirations from Amy's posts on Kicking the ML out of my home as well as several blog posts on Bilingual Monkeys. My children are older (12, 9, 7 and 6) so I need to be more creative in convincing them to switch from ML to ml.
I welcome comments or criticism of my plan.
1) I need to follow Amy's example and kick the ML out of our home. I am going through all of our reading materials, wall hangings, music, and switching them to ml.
2) I am making a greeting for our front door in the ml that says "Welcome, here we speak French" as a visual reminder for all of us.
3) I am hanging a list of the 10 challenges on Bilingual Zoo that I translated into ml on the fridge.
4) I have a multi-sensory, interactive learn-to-read program that I am adding to our homework routine.
5) My biggest challenge is consistency and remembering to talk and answer in the ml, especially when my children respond in the ML. I am going to make it fun for my children, and give them a coin each time they catch me speaking ML.
6) I have ordered new materials that capture each child's unique interests in the ml.
7) I made 5 mailboxes out of juice cartons so we can exchange letters and cards in the ml. I want to use this as a way to encourage them to read in the ml. And if they write back to me in the ml, bonus!!! They may even receive a special treat in return.
8) I am going to journal our daily progress.
9) I'm looking into a summer trip to Ottawa or Quebec where they can attend a French camp to boost their ml.
10) I'm going to try and be very patient as they adjust to a ml home and relationship with me. And celebrate each new milestone, even the smallest gains!
