Hi everyone!
I'm Anne, native Dutch (Netherlands) and happy to join this group!
I'm living in Italy together with my Italian husband and almost three year old son Gabriel. From the moment I knew I was pregnant I couldn't wait for the moment that I could actually start this bilingual journey together with my child. It has been part of my academic studies, the process of learning a second language from a linguistic point of view. We decided to apply the OPOL method, Dutch with me and Italian with his father, and I put in all my efforts to provide him with a high input of Dutch each day through reading, playing and singing. I've always been consistent in speaking exclusively Dutch with Gabriel and Italian with my husband.
Now, at two years and almost 10 months we find ourselves at a crossroad. Gabriel still doesn't speak. Neither Italian nor Dutch. No "yes" or "no" in either of the languages. Just an occasional "mama", "papa". His understanding is okay, in both languages. He understands what we say and what we ask him. His hearing abilities have been tested recently. They are fine. As time goes by, the gap with peers grows and as he'll enter kindergarten within a few months we need to make some initial steps. It's not only the language delay but also his behavioral habits which makes us move towards some neurological check-ups. His bilingual upbringing will without any doubt be questioned. And here starts a new journey. When to decide what? My heart will cry the moment I'll need to give up speaking in mother tongue with my boy.
Hopefully I'll find some useful information and experiences here with you people!
Thanks, grazie, dank jullie wel!
