Our family lives in France where we have 3 bilingual daughters with French and International Language (Esperanto).
I may quickly answer the usual questions I am accustomed to hear :
- Why bilingual children and not learn French first?
Well, If you are reading this forum, you might know why
. If you do not, it is simple. Whilst children learn to speak, they can learn to speak in two languages if there are 2 languages in the environment. After this time (7 years more or less), they can speak. They do not need to learn to speak, but they learn a language which is now foreign to them. And that makes a huge difference.
- Why use Esperanto and not English?
English is not our language and has no place in our geographical, cultural and personal life. Whilst Esperanto is quick and easy to learn to a level when you appropriate the language to make it yours. It is not a foreign language anymore to me and it is the father language of my daughters.
- Where can you use Esperanto as there is no country (Tre ofta bla bla)?
Everywhere there is somebody who can use it. Might be in your country, I might have visited your neighbour and you do not even know he/she can speak it !
- Do your children speak Esperanto among them?
They speak French when they are not in Esperantio. Whilst they are in the country (Esperantio), between 3 weeks to 3 month a year, they speak Esperanto.
- Is it hard to learn Esperanto?
This question is always a puzzle for me. Esperanto was MADE to be easy to learn. Why so many people cannot try it instead of thinking about it. It would prevent them to talk waffles about it, especially if they know nothing about it.
- Do people have an accent when they speak Esperanto?
When they are pretty good you cannot say where they come from. But, I never understood why my eldest, Mary, talks like a Frenchwoman in French, like a Frenchwoman in German and like a German in Esperanto!
