Hello,
I need some ideas! I have 2 older sons who I started speaking the minority language (French) to but stopped for different reasons. Now they are ages 10 and 7. I have a 4 year old and a 3 year old who are not bilingual but LOVE learning our minority language and soak it up. I find it so easy because the beginner books and small board games are just perfect for their ages so I have lots of materials that interest them in French.
I am having trouble finding materials and ideas that are basic enough for the boys to learn French but that they would be interested in. My older son has autism so he is highly fascinated by clocks, turbines, ceiling fans and other things he can take apart and build. My younger son is seven and seems to only be interested in super heroes and Transformers. But the graphic novels in French at our library are too advanced for me to really build on his basic vocabulary. The boys understand daily routine sentences like "go brush you teeth, are you hungry, I don't know, what do you want to eat..." They know their colours and several animals in French. They know lots of children's songs in French. But that is really the extent of it.
I would love for all my children to be fully bilingual. I am home full time with them. And I homeschool them. But we homeschool in English. So I have the time to put into this. I just need some fresh ideas to gain their interest and motivate them to learn French.
Also, does anyone use incentives to encourage their children to use the minority language in sibling play? Is there any way to shift sibling play from the majority language to minority language?
Thanks, Melissa
