Hi. I have been wavering what language I should use for my second child.
As for my first child, I started bilingual education when he was 7 months old. I have spoken to him both in English and in Japanese depending on time or place. Since I was not sure if it worked, I consciously put emphasis on Japanese. So, now his Japanese is brilliant but of course his English ability is not so good. He barely outputs things in English. (He is 3 years and 7 months.)
About a month ago, I was told an effective way for my kid to output in this forum:
To use a monolingual puppet which can understand and speak only English. Since I did not have a cute puppet I want to use, I did it with my second baby (2 months old). Amazingly, it worked for my first child! Now, my first child has started to speak English little by little. He speaks only English with my baby (my voice), and this is wonderful!
However, I have got another concern about my baby's language.
Currently, I speak to my baby in English in front of my son, which takes up most of her time of a day. I speak to her in Japanese only when my first goes to nursery school (from 9 AM to 3 PM, but most of this time, she sleeps). If I was a native English speaker, it is not a problem at all. However, I am not a native speaker and do not have a great ability of English, I worry about my baby's language acquisition.
1. I want to use my baby as a monolingual puppet for my son (sorry, not a good expression) because it works so well.
2. I want to speak to my baby in English in front of my son. (I told him that my baby only understands English.)
However, I am so afraid if this would mix her up with two languages. (Broken English and little exposure of Japanese makes...?? For my first child, broken English and much Japanese made good Japanese ability.)
Should I stop using her as a puppet?
Should I stop talking with her in English most of her time?
