Hello everyone! My name is Norma and I am so happy to be a new member to this wonderful zoo. I am Salvadoran-American; I was born in El Salvador, a small country in Central America, but raised in the United States. I speak Spanish, English and I am currently learning French.
My husband is French and we have a 1 year old daughter. We live in Yssingeaux, France; I’ve been living here since November 2014. My husband and I speak English to each other because it is our common language. Our goal is for our daughter to be “true bilingual” in French and English. Also, we would like for her to speak and understand Spanish so that she can communicate with my grandparents and other relatives who do not live in the United States. As a new parent, and as the parent of a multilingual child, I find myself constantly doing research and learning ways to help her during such important developmental stages of her life. That is how I found this wonderful bilingual zoo!
My husband and I use the OPOL system, but I would like to learn new ways to incorporate Spanish into her daily routine. We are currently reading stories to her in all three languages and speaking a lot. Our daughter loves animals so we take the opportunity to teach her the names in French and English. I feel guilty sometimes because I don’t know if it will be too much to also say the names in Spanish. I really don’t know how to balance two minority languages at the same time. I am here because I would like to be part of a community where we can share our experiences and learn from each other. It is a difficult journey, especially for first time parents like my husband and I, so we really need a community for support and guidance. I look forward to learning from all of your experiences and I hope that one day I can help other bilingual parents during their journey.
