I’m Claudia, originally from Peru but living in the UK for the past seven years. I live in London with my husband who is French/British and our two daughters (3yo and 6mo). I speak Spanish, English and French. At home we follow OPOL with me speaking in Spanish and my husband in French.
Our eldest is fully bilingual in both, many thanks to all the tips I found in Adam’s books and the bilingual community. It also has helped that she had a French nanny and her cousins nearby and that the last 4 months my parents have been visiting us to help me with the girls.
Now I’m considering homeschooling but I don’t know if anyone has been in a similar situation. I don’t know how to approach phonics, for example. How do you teach the majority language in a homeschool setting? My eldest's English level is difficult to tell, she knows lots of nursery rhymes but when she goes to the playground she doesn’t communicate much with other children. She’s starting nursery 3 days a week so it will probably pick up there, but in case I decide to homeschool I don’t know how to approach teaching the majority language.
Also if someone can point out any resources for teaching phonics in French? Or Spanish? Spanish is great in that the way you write is the way you pronounce, but then it also limits us when learning other languages.
Claudia, welcome! It sounds like your multilingual journey with your girls is going well! Good for you, and good for them!
And I'm happy to know that my books have been helpful to you! (Please consider sharing your positive impressions in short reviews at Amazon and/or Goodreads, if you haven't already. Thank you!)
As for homeschooling, I'm not familiar with the homeschooling space online, but if you decide to pursue this path with your daughter, homeschooling sites and groups in the UK would be especially useful for organizing and implementing your approach. Of course, along with the various subjects, you would need to consider how to maintain a suitable balance of exposure in your family's three languages.
In the meantime, I expect your daughter's English side will grow quickly as she attends nursery school. Observing her there, and speaking with the teachers, will give you a good sense of her English level at this point. And I imagine nursery school will also help clarify in your own mind whether or not regular schooling or homeschooling is the preferred choice for your family.
