Hello. I'll keep this short as I have started a thread in 'Track Your Progress' with lots of details.
I'm Carrie. I live in the UK with my husband and three kids (twins Lily and Alex almost 3, and baby Jamie).
I am a non native speaker of German and am trying to do (a not completely strict version of) OPOL with my children in this language. They understand a lot and their usage is growing.
The main challenge I have is just keeping up with the new vocabulary I need. The twins are getting to a point where I seem to be needing more complex sentences with them and to express more subtle differences in meaning (particularly around feelings and discipline) which is pushing and increasing my own language skills. I constantly have homework in order to stay comfortably ahead of them.
In the future hopefully travel will be become an option to increase their native speaker exposure and potentially babysitters / Au pairs, but unfortunately for the next 2-3 years that isn't an option.
The next challenge is getting them to use the language. I have noticed the more time they spend at home with me the more words they use. Also when we recently visited my father (who is a native speaker) they started using more. So I am feeling quite positive about our journey at the moment. They do regularly use ml with me, but often it is in ML sentences. I would be ok with this if it was because they didn't know a specific word in ml, but they often use ML as the 'framework' e.g. It is heiß (hot), I want Erdbeeren (strawberries). I am hoping to get them to a point where they speak ml as the framework and plug in ML if they need to.
