Hi everyone,
My name is Francesco and I live in the UK with my wife and little boy who is now 7 months old. I am determined to raise a trilingual child and teach him two languages (Italian is my mother tongue and I also speak Spanish). The majority language in our case is English, which is spoken by my wife. I also communicate with my wife in English, although the ultimate goal is to speak as much Italian as possible at home.
Thanks to Adam’s book (thank you Adam, such a good book with useful tips!) I started reading every day to my child in Italian. This has not only given me the chance to spend quality time with him but it has also given me the foundations to build a habit, that will eventually become a very beneficial daily routine for me and my son.
At the moment I spend the first two hours in the morning with my child alone (letting mummy catch up on her sleep!). During this time, I play Italian radio in the background, I talk in Italian whilst playing games and I also read all sorts of books to him (I am not getting much response so far as he is very wiggly at the moment, but I do enjoy the process of talking to my child in my mother tongue, and I can already feel a special bond strengthening with him).
Concerns:
One thing I am not sure about is how to introduce a second minority language at this stage.
I have started introducing a “monolingual assistant” – a toy rabbit called Pedro that only speaks Spanish ☺. My son seems to like when Pedro “talks” to him with a Mexican accent! I would also like to start reading Spanish books but not sure whether I should dedicate a specific day or a moment in the week for Spanish only activities, to separate the Spanish talk and reads from the moments when I speak or read in Italian.
Any suggestions are very welcome!
Thank you Adam for all your great tips and I look forward to speaking to you all on the forum for more suggestions and input.
All the best from the UK
