Well yesterday was the last day of school. Now I have a child in 1st and 5th grade.
I set myself the goal of language police until the end of the school year. Results are positive, but not as positive as I dared to hope. Every (or almost every) English sentence out of my little one’s mouth got called out. While she didn’t fight this, and did switch to Russian when requested, she also hasn’t broken the habit completely. I’d say she’s still starts conversations in English 50% of the time. So I’ll probably extend the deadline for a few weeks. I thought she’d fight and get annoyed by all the constant requests, but since she’s handling them so well I might as well continue.
Some random tidbits:
I got their report cards and my oldest, who has undergone state testing since 3rd grade, has received top marks in English Language Arts. I’m so incredibly proud of that achievement because ML is one of the languages in her life, and still she does so well.
With school being out, our schedule can finally accommodate bedtime reading again. That makes me happy. I hate the 3 months out of the year when we don’t have time for it, and every year I’m afraid we won’t be able to reestablish it. Although this year I’m more confident in the enduring desire my kids have for bedtime stories.
I’m learning Spanish to keep up with the kiddos, and my oldest seemed very interested in the vocabulary app I was using (Memrise). She tried the Russian courses, but they were not a good match for her skill set. She really likes the gameplay aspect of it though, so she asked me to make her a course just for her. I plan on doing that in the next few weeks with focus on time-related vocabulary and grammar hoping that it may be a good way for her to polish some of that grammar and gain an increased vocabulary.
All in all summer is here for us and I’m incredibly excited about the opportunities for educational quality time the next few months will bring.
