I can go onto a website for all the libraries of my state and request any book at any library in my state and they will send it for me to pick up at my local library. Their search feature is kind of clunky to use, so it is hard to do a general search, but if you know exactly what you want you can search it. I searched for Barco de Vapor like you recommended, and they had four books, so I have requested them. I am also going to search some specific titles, just in case they have more that have not been tagged with the publisher's name. I searched "Barco de Vapor" here on the zoo, and found a post by Raquel from a few months ago where she listed a whole bunch of titles, so I will search those as well. Thank you both for your help!

I'm back here to report on how the goals I posted a couple weeks ago are going...

8 year old

Find resources.

My daughter has read 6 chapter books towards her 25 book goal. I have a bunch more on hold at the library that I will pick up this week. I have also researched several more and will buy them as soon as I choose which ones to start with. I joined a FB group that Marta recommended and it looks like it has a ton of recommendations, so I just have to go through and see which ones are available to me. Sometimes books recommended in Spain I can't find at a reasonable price, but I'm sure as I go through the suggestions I'll find at least some that I can get.

6 year old

Review the basics.

I printed out a ml calendar with large numbers that fill up the entire day and put it up on the fridge. Then I made a square magnet with the middle cut out so that you can move it to put a square around the current day. So every day I have my son move the magnet and tell me (in ml), "Today is Sunday, the 23rd of June."

I have also played a bunch of games with him, such as Rummikub and Dominoes. Marta also reminded me that I had a lovely card game where half of the cards just have the numeral (ie 12) and the other half have a number of sea animals (ie 12 dolphins) with the number written out (ie twelve). The numbers are written in ML, but that's nothing my handy little label maker couldn't fix. I actually got my son involved and told him I wanted to label the cards in ml, could he help me with the label maker, and he very eagerly typed in the name of each number in ml. Then I checked his spelling before he hit print. Afterwards he took the cards to play with all by himself and I could hear him saying the numbers aloud to himself in ml from the other room.

I still need to do the Bingo game that Marta suggested. (Obviously your post was helpful Marta! Thank you!)

In addition to these things, I have started having him (and my other kids) watch an episode of Salsa every day (http://www.gpb.org/salsa). They are 15 minutes long each, and they are puppet characters that review the basics such as numbers, opposites, days of the week through stories. They are completely in Spanish (ml). I had my daughter watch an episode every day when she was in Kindergarten (5 years old), but my son was only 3 then so I don't think he remembers it. So since my son just graduated Kindergarten I realized he should watch it over the summer because I missed doing it with him this past school year. It's also been good for my three year old.

3 year old

Make time.

I have done a lot with my three year old and try to join in on whatever he is doing every day to get in some more ml. We have done puzzles, games, pretend play, coloring with chalk, etc. I also include him and talk with him while I am doing other things like cooking or laundry. His ml use has increased drastically.

1 year old

Prioritize little moments.

I have started a short routine where I read 1-2 board books and sing 1-2 songs both before naptime and bedtime with my youngest. I did not have this consistently in place before, but it has become a habit now. I also have been very mindful of talking to her every chance I get while I am doing anything like changing her diaper, putting her in her chair, etc. I have been teaching her things like where is your nose, mouth, belly, etc. I've also been much more proactive about describing everything to her as I do it.

This Week

My goal this week is to start a summer homework routine. We are very consistent during the school year, but now that it is the summer we have not put a routine in place. I have all the resources to do it, I just need to get back in the habit and make it happen.

Last week we did our summer homework routine four days out of five, after not doing any ml homework for an entire month. (I don't ever plan to do written homework on the weekends, but they do read alone in ml generally seven days a week.) But my summertime goal would be to do written homework with them 4-5 days per week until the school year starts again.

I also read aloud to them 29/30 days in June.

Overall I am happy with the progress I see, although of course there is always room for improvement. I still need to spend more time looking for resources for my older son and daughter. I have found several new books that Marta recommended, and I actually picked them up from the library this morning. But at the same time my daughter found 4x the number of books in ML at the library that she wanted to check out.

I am happy that she is a good reader in both her languages.

I would like to increase their ml exposure to people other than me, so I need to brainstorm how I can do that. We have not written to any of our penpals in quite some time, so I think I will start with that.

Glad so many of you can travel to ml countries over the summer vacations. Hope you all have safe travels and amazing ml exposure!

It always amazes me how well you do reading to them almost every night. My kids sometimes fall asleep in the car when coming back home from wherever, and so there's no reading.

That's funny about your daughter finding so many ML books that she wants to read. But I think that's fine; they need to be able to read in both languages, right?

When you mentioned looking for ml exposure for you kids coming from others, I thought you meant in person. Don't you know any other parents near you doing this very thing? Or maybe events for Spanish speakers? Students you could hire to come weekly? Just throwing a few ideas out there. I think face to face conversation is important, whenever possible. But it's hard to come by, isn't it?

A while ago I set a (very) small goal for myself to read for at least 5 minutes in ml each day. I want to improve my own ml, which in the long run will benefit the kids’ ml as well. Last night I completed 100 days of reading at least 5 minutes per day without missing a day. So with this small goal I have read over 8 hours in the ml to myself in the last few months, and often I read beyond the 5 minute minimum I set, so the time accrued is even more.

Just wanted to encourage everyone that all the little minutes really do add up! Sometimes I wait to do something with the kids until I can do it perfectly and on a large scale, but small and consistent is often better.

Congratulations, Carrie!! I don't read every day, but I'm trying to read much more. I think it helps a lot. I do a lot to try and improve my ml. Amy and I had a discussion on the matter somewhere on this forum. It includes changing all my devices into the ml, car GPS included, watching television and going to the movies in this language, reading, listening to music... One thing I've been doing lately that helps me quite a bit is visiting the Word Reference forums when I have a little time to myself, and reading people's translations and discussions. I later find myself using expressions and words from what I read that I wouldn't use otherwise. If you're looking for ways to improve your Spanish, this is something I recommend.

Several years ago I read a guest post on a Russian speaker's blog about how to show your children the importance of practicing the ml. It has been simmering in the back of my mind for the last few years, waiting for when I felt my kids would be old enough to benefit from the activity. This morning I did it with them, and it was great!

I modified it slightly to serve my purposes. First I printed out a page for each child with an empty head silhouette. (https://patternuniverse.com/download/human-head-pattern/) Then I gave each child a bright orange marker. We started putting dots inside the head for each place or person we could think of where we spoke English. So for example, we go to the park regularly with friends. The kids agreed that we spoke a ton of English (ML) at the park, so they each gave their head 10 bright orange dots. Play date with ML friends, 5 more orange dots. Fourth of July BBQ with friends, more orange dots. Playing with neighbors, more orange dots. Fun day with Grandma, more orange dots.

Once the head was very full of orange dots, I gave them each a light gray marker. And we started our Spanish (ml) dots. A lot of our ml people also got ML dots as well. For example, my daughter decided that she occasionally spoke ml with her brother, but usually they spoke ML. So she put 8 dots in ML orange and 3 dots in ml gray to represent her brother.

In the end, the kids saw how much they speak ML, and how little opportunities there are for ml. I asked them if they want to be able to speak ml when they are older. They said yes. And (this is the amazing part!) they have been reminding each other to play in ml the rest of the day! There is still a lot of ML mixed in, but I think they have realized why it matters. I´ll report back a few weeks from now to see if it stuck.

I was looking for something new to listen to in the car with my kids, and I decided to look into podcasts. I’ve never really listened to them myself, so this is new territory for me, but I read a blogpost by Spanish Mama with a long list of podcasts to check out. (spanishmama.com/the-best-spanish-podcasts-for-learning-spanish/) Many of them are geared towards learning Spanish as a second language, but the second recommendation on the kids’ list (scroll way down the post) is for Allegro Mágico.

This podcast is amazing! It’s a mom who wanted to teach her kids about classical music so she made a podcast for kids (and in Spanish!) She does several different kinds of episodes, such as biographies of famous composers, or telling the stories behind famous compositions, or talking about different instruments. It’s very well done! Today we hadn’t even buckled into the car yet and my daughter was already asking if we could listen to the next episode.

If you sign up on the blog you get a free download also, plus emails with helpful links and book recommendations. The blog has lots of info, so be sure to check that out too. Also, sometimes she references something in the podcast like an unusual instrument, and she also puts a link in the episode notes so you can watch a short video of someone playing it. Obviously I don’t do this in the car, but I can follow up later and do it during our ml homework time.

(Nellie , I was thinking this might be great to listen to with your daughter in addition to her ml2 music tutor. She might not be quite old enough to understand all the biographic info, but the classical music is so enjoyable that all my kids listen in the car, even the younger ones.)

And I listen to La pequeteca, which is a very short radio program about books for children (although it is me listening to it to know what new children books are coming out in Spain) www.rtve.es/alacarta/audios/la-pequeteca/

There is also a radio program for children called La estacion azul www.rtve.es/alacarta/audios/la-estacion-azul-de-los-ninos/ that I have played now and then on car rides. It is very well done, since it is a professional podcast, but it didn't catch my children's interest very much.

Thanks for checking in.

It's been a very busy few months, but now that the school year has started we are slowly settling in to our regular routines. I am due to post an update on everyone's ml...maybe sometime soon.

My 3 year old has turned 4, and is doing well. He is happy to reply in whatever language is spoken to him. Sometimes I feel he doesn't get enough input, but then occasionally I overhear him playing in ml all by himself, and it makes my day.

I read to him more than any of my other children. I also do a little homework routine with him on school days. It is not very long, maybe 5-10 minutes, but I am teaching him some of the ml letters. I also have my 8 year old spend 5-10 minutes with him each school day. I find activities to print (such has cut and glue activities that focus on one of the ml letters) and they do that project together. They both love it. I'm not sure how effective it is, because I am working with my 6 year old when they are together so I can't listen in, but I figure if they both enjoy it that is good enough.

Slow and steady wins the race, so we are mostly plodding along over here! I can promise we are not doing anything amazing, but the persistence seems to be working.

I read in another post that your older son is reading now in ml. That is fabulous! Now he will start to accrue many more hours of ml exposure than what you can provide on your own. Good job teaching him to read in your ml. I know it is much harder to teach another alphabet (our ml and ML share an alphabet) so congratulations on all your hard work!
