I wasn't sure where to post this, but thought I would just post it here, in case anyone else finds themselves in a similar situation of sending their child to a bilingual school and wanting to know the experiences of others.
My daughter has had a great first week starting French. She had basic French knowledge from previously doing after school French clubs and having a French nanny a few hours Saturday and Sunday. But we don't speak French at home. I'm learning it as she learns. She has transitioned very easily. What I think helped her is going in with basic French knowledge and knowing a few kids already in the school. She started out with a few friends so that helped a lot.
She is excited when she sees me get excited about her work and we listen to the music together with her brother and watch the reading youtube videos together with him. Both kids love this. I can see she is already practicing her French sounds, words and songs more when at home while playing, which of course her younger brother repeats everything. I was so happy to see the first vocabulary list of homework she brought home, she already knew every word, but two! It made me so proud, especially since none of us speak French and I have been teaching and learning with her the last few months making my own flash cards. So I have prepared her well.
I will keep you all updated with her progress here. I'm very curious when she will start to speak with other French speakers confidently. At the moment when new French people speak to her in French, she doesn't respond and just gets very shy!
I'm very happy she's enjoying the school. She starts English week tomorrow (they begin their weeks on Thursdays), so will be interested to see what she thinks.
