Hello everyone!
My 8-year-old daughter, who is in a school with a bilingual program (ML French and our ml German) won't be able to continue her after-school English course in the new school year. She'd been doing it for three years but though she's very keen on learning English (her best friend is bilingual French-English), she hasn't learned much, and from what I've heard form other parents, this particular course doesn't seem to be very effective.
Anyway, since things don't work out due to conflicting activity schedules, I've decided to try and do it myself. The goal is to do a regular, structured session once a week (30 minutes for starters, that's as much as I can realistically hope to do). So now I'm looking for ideas, inspiration and resources.
I've been thinking of maybe singing a song, a worksheet or two (though I'd rather focus on speaking rather than reading or writing so as not to confuse her with the spelling, as I fear it might confuse her as she's learning spelling in German and French at the moment), me reading her a short story (picture book?) and a chat, a situation like going shopping or ordering in a restaurant, and finish off with a short film clip in English (they watched Mr Bean in her English course this year, and she's been asking for more).
My primary goal is to keep up a regular English exposure, I'd already tried it this school year but it lasted all of two weeks. I want to make it fun for her to keep up her motivation.
My secondary goal is for her to actually learn some English and be able to speak it. We're hoping to go back to Canada next summer, and it would be nice if by then she'd feel comfortable with some basic phrases (we'll meet anglophone kids her age if all goes well).
Any advice, resources, ideas?
Many thanks!
