Country (residing now): USA
Country (originally from): Belarus
Children, Ages: One two year old Monkey
Majority Language: English
Minority Language(s): Russian
Current Challenge in Your Bilingual Journey: Just starting my bilingual journey, feeling overwhelmed already. Working full-time, limited time to spend with my child. I am the only source of Russian language for her. My husband speaks English, we speak English when we are all together or in public, with friends & family. Really worried about providing sufficient exposure.
Right now my daughter is two, and picking up her English with a lightning speed. Our ML is already lagging so far behind. I recently caved in and started using English with her in private - that was the only way to have her understand what I was saying & have a chance of her following any directions. When I speak Russian to her she gets upset & either cries/yells with frustration or stops paying any attention to me & what I'm saying altogether. So yes, I am playing catch up already. Happened fast.
I am ready to get organized & on track with my efforts to help my child become bilingual. I purchased Adam's book, read almost half of it already, and feel very inspired & motivated. I want to at least give it a solid try.
I don't know where to begin. Do I speak things to her in English & then translate them into Russian to help understand what I'm saying? Do I continue to frustrate her with the one parent-one language approach in the hopes that one day it clicks & she starts understanding me? I would like to build up slowly to the point when one parent-one language is even feasible, but, again, don't know where to start at the moment.

Amy: Caught my eldest bragging to her cousin she could speak ml2 and asked him in ml2 if they could continue playing in this language....could it be my daughter is slowly accepting the fact she's bilingual and happy to be so...?? ::) Jul 31, 2017 5:07:41 GMT 9
Mayken: Not all fun after all - we were at a castle today with an amazing 3h treasure hunt, but it was all in ML. My daughter did lots of ML reading (clues), but no chance of slipping ml in. Aug 1, 2017 4:13:44 GMT 9 *

Mayken: Welcome back, Adam! We kept the zoo running while you were away and even swept up the monkey droppings! Aug 2, 2017 18:26:12 GMT 9
Adam Beck: Well done, Mayken! Many thanks! (I was afraid I would be overwhelmed by the monkey droppings.) ;) Aug 3, 2017 6:18:08 GMT 9

Mayken: Mind-boggling. On the other hand, this child doesn't seem to have any free time to just play... Aug 21, 2017 23:17:52 GMT 9
Shuo: This video has been very popular in my Facebook circle. But I think she'll finally be fluent in only two or three languages. Aug 22, 2017 3:48:10 GMT 9
Wojtek: I am pondering what the point of teaching her so many languages is (Even her parents concluded she would be learning only three languages from school on) Aug 22, 2017 20:40:34 GMT 9
