Children, Ages: D - 11/08/2016
Majority Language: English
Minority Language(s): Russian, attempting to teach myself and D BSL
Current Challenge in Your Bilingual Journey: As my daughter does not speak yet, the challenge comes from the decision on how to expose her to the two languages. Both my husband and I are native Russian speakers, so it makes sense to speak Russian between ourselves and at home. However I do not want my daughter to be behind on her English either, it is very important to me that she doesn't have communication barrier with her friends and doesn't feel like an immigrant. I also have concerns about her future academic proficiency at school. She still has about 2-3 naps a day, which divides it into 3-4 wakenings. What we've done is spend one of these wakenings (the one that we go outside and meet other English speakers) purely in English from the moment she wakes up to the moment she goes down for her next nap.I know that this is not ideal, but I cant come up with anything better, if you can - do contact me and share your thoughts on the subject!

I am also generally concerned about her language development, which I believe is slightly behind. As much as I would like to tell myself that this is because she is bilingual and just needs to take a little longer to catch up, I think there might be an actual problem. We are going to see our health visitor about it and hopefully get a referral to see a speech specialist.
Something Funny or Interesting About You: I always wanted to learn BSL (or any other sign language) and now seems to be a perfect time, so we are now trying to incorporate a couple of signs into our daily routine and hopefully go much further from there. Our town has quite a big school for deaf children, so the skill might actually come in handy if my daughter makes friends with some of the kids that will go there.

Marisa: My daughter won't say number one in Spanish or English, but in German! She loves recognizing the number and saying it out loud... it sounds more like the word 'ice' in English, though, but it's 'eins.' Number 9, however, is 'nueve'. So funny! Oct 11, 2017 10:33:45 GMT 9
Wojtek: I've just received Evan's Moore skill sharpeners for my girl on pre-k level. I have to say it is so cool, my daughter loves it. She can cut, glue, color ( Oct 11, 2017 18:30:27 GMT 9 *
