Dear bilingual parents,
I am a mother of two young children, a 19-month-old girl and 3.5-year-old boy. I am Polish whilst my husband is English and we live in a small town in the heart of England. We are trying to raise our children bilingually however some days I feel it’s a battle that I am losing.
From day one I have been speaking to both of my children in Polish (fully, which means at home, when we go shopping, doctors) whilst my husband speaks English. At home I need to communicate to my husband in English as he does not speak Polish. My children fully understand Polish however are not keen on speaking it. I speak Polish and they respond in English.
I have tried to give them more exposure to Polish however it is difficult as there are not many Polish-speaking people around where we live. I try to visit a friend regularly in London who is Polish and has two little boys but she is experiencing the same problem so when we do meet we have four monkeys speaking English to each other.
My parents visit once a year for a week and I try to visit them as well but again they just keep to their English side of their language.
We also do Skype fortnightly with them.
My kids love books so both of us are reading to them. One evening in English, one evening in Polish which they are really enjoying. We also do songs before they go to bed.
When my older was one year old we got Polish TV. Not that I recommend a one-year-old watch TV however it comes in handy now as they can watch Polish cartoons.
I work part-time and both of my monkeys go to nursery and grandparents which is great as it gives them exposure to other things but unfortunately both settings are English based therefore more emphasis on the other language.
So what is my approach when kids respond in English? I just repeat what they said but in Polish so they know how to say it.
My older one has a bit of a stammer so I don’t ask him and don’t put any pressure on him to speak Polish as this is only worsening his language situation.
Both of my little ones will drop a Polish word here and there during a conversation which we give high-five for but that is rare.
I know it’s the beginning of the road with my younger one as she is just starting to speak but I feel that I am losing the battle with my older one as he is resistant to speak Polish. I know things will get worse in 6 months time as he will be starting primary school.
I am not giving up and I carry on speaking to them in our native language however was wondering what else I can do.
Advice would be appreciated.
Best wishes,
Aga
