Adam, I read that lovely post about treasure hunting on the Bilingual Monkeys website, and thought I'd update our activity.
We kind of exhausted all the hiding places in the house...so I actually changed our treasure hunt last week, making it more interesting and fun. And it lasts longer too. This is how we play.
Of course it’s still a treasure hunt so I hide some treasure (treat, toy, book etc.) Let’s say it’s behind the Nutella jar in the kitchen. So our keyword is NUTELLA.
My son has to find all the letters to get this keyword, so I “hide” N,U,T,E,L,L,A but not in the right order. Let’s see.
Task n.1 “Go to the kitchen and check in our family calendar what day is the 26th October this year. Now write down the third letter of that day (It’s a Monday, so he gets the letter “N”.)
Task n.2 “Go to your room and get out your lego/duplo box. I wrote the next letter on a yellow brick. Good luck with this one.” (I wrote the letter “L” with a permanent marker, it took him ages to find it and was very noisy, but he enjoyed this task the most!)
Task n.3 “ Go to the bathroom and check our washing machine’s brand name. Write down the fifth letter.” (Samsung-so he gets the “U”.)
Task n.4 “Do this sum. 78+49=… The result is the page number that you’ll need to find in your first Harry Potter book. A letter is hidden there. (I wrote the letter “T” on a tiny piece of paper.)
Task n.5 “What’s your eldest cousin’s name? Write down the last letter. (“E”)
Task n.6 “Go to the kitchen again and open the cupboard next to the fridge. The next letter is hidden on a box of pasta.” (I highlighted the letter “L” in Cannelloni.)
Task n.7 “What’s your favourite cartoon character’s name? Write down the first letter. (“A” from Alvin and the Chipmunks.)
It takes a bit of preparation but it’s worth it. Nutella was an easy word to guess but if he/she struggles you can tell him/her which the first and/or the last letter is of your keyword.
Any new ideas are appreciated!
