When ml2 has a different alphabet...

Hi lovely people,
I know I'm thinking ahead as my son is 1, but I am trying to set goals of where we want our child to be with our three languages.
Our ml2, his dad's language, is Hindi. We want our son to be an active speaker to be able to communicate with our family in India, and to communicate with his dad in this language.
Now, there could be a change in the near future, but while my husband is convinced of this goal of my son speaking Hindi, it doesn't matter to him if he learns how to read it and it doesn't look like it bothers him much that he will not have the same level as a native Hindi child raised in India for instance.
I understand that is an option, it depends on the goal you have, right? Do any of you have experience of learning a language just orally without the written code? I somehow suspect it will not be as easy as it sounds past a certain stage. I am thinking for instance story time with his dad once he can read... If the language is not used then he may lose it.
It all started because I saw a nice blog post from Adam on a mum creating Hindi alphabet blocks for her son which I thought were lovely. And of course a lot of questions came to mind.
Some of them are, if we do go ahead and invest in him learning the alphabet, will this have a consequence in the other two languages? As in will it interfere with his reading in ML and ml1? Should this be included at a later stage due to its complexity?
Another question is, if my husband is not all in and just wants my son to "get by" speaking to the family, then as it's not my language really, I think I would need to back off, as much as I would like my son to have the best chance of being fully trilingual, enjoying books in Hindi for instance.
Any experience on this?? I am thinking a bit about Adam's background with Japanese, but of course I think what changes things is the fact that this is a ml2 language, and I think I also feel I don't have so much control over it.
