Hello. My daughter who is 4.5 is transferring into a French Bilingual school in January! We are so lucky to have gotten her in. We live in London, where I have heard it's impossible, you must be French, famous or know someone high up! However, I decided I would try and wrote a letter in her application explaining my passion for her to learn French and everything we have been doing to support this, even though we do not speak French ourselves (but I am learning as she learns, but she of course has surpassed me). Anyway, with luck it worked and there was a spot and she got it! I could not believe it. In fact everyone was so surprised, so I know we are very lucky and it is only a 10 minute walk away, half the distance of her other school. She was doing well and happy in her other school, however I really want her to learn French and be bilingual so we are transferring her.
Any advice or tips would be very much welcomed. I read some horror stories about kids who shut down, started not talking and closing up in school etc. My daughter is very confident and has been to French camp all day for a week, where they only spoke French and she enjoyed it and never complained it was in French and same for her after school activities...so I am hoping she will be okay in the new school. She also knows 6 kids that are in the school (we all live in the same area).
I also read that kids when they start can be super tired and grumpy after because it is a lot to take in.
I plan to try and arrange some play dates asap so she gets to know the kids in her class better. I also plan to make sure she sleeps early etc so she is rested for school.
Anyone else in similar situation and about to start bilingual? Anyone with kids in bilingual schools, can you tell me your experiences?
Many thanks!
