My name is Sasha, I am Russian and my husband is German. Our daughter Anouk has just turned 1 year old and I am looking for different ways to help her learn one of her mother languages. I always speak Russian to her and my husband speaks German. We speak German to each other but my level is not that great. I need some language improving myself =)
I am trying to read Anouk children's books in Russian, but it doesn't work that well yet because she always tries to take the books from me and start "reading" herself =)
I also got a toy for her that plays Russian songs, tells stories, alphabet etc and play it a little bit every day. Because of Covid19 we didnt have a chance to fly to Russia yet to visit my parents and my sister, but that will be also an important part of Anouk's life.
I have a few Russian friends here in Germany, but not in the city where we live.
The book of Mr. Beck is giving good insights and tips so hopefully the journey with 2 languages will be successful, joyful and positive for all three of us =)
P.S. Wishing all the parents good luck and plenty of joy as well as patience in giving your children the most important gift - the heritage.
And many thanks to Adam Beck for creating such a community.
Sasha, welcome! (Feel free to call me Adam.) That's a lovely photo of you and your daughter!
It sounds like you're making good efforts to nurture her Russian side and I encourage you to keep doing your best from day to day. Talking to her a lot and reading to her a lot are the two most productive actions you can take so definitely continue making these your highest priority. (And don't worry about her lack of attention span at this point when you try to read to her; just maintain this routine on a daily basis and make books an important part of your life together.)
Speaking of books, thank you for reading mine! I hope it can continue to be a source of support to you on your bilingual journey. (I'd be really grateful for your review at Amazon when you finish reading it.) And I hope this friendly community can be another helpful source of support to you.
Sasha, I look forward to following your adventures with Anouk! I send warm wishes from Japan to Germany!

Najwa: My eldest sings and verbalizes his figures/cars stories in an invented language that has English sounds and Italian accent. Is it his way to disconnect from his multilingual world?

Adam Beck: Najwa, it's hard to respond to your question without knowing the full details of the situation. I suggest starting a thread at a suitable board and offering as much information about these circumstances as you can.
