My heart goes out to all of you, all over the world, during these difficult days. The coronavirus pandemic is not only an existential crisis for our physical lives; the rapid unraveling of life as we’ve known it—with so much uncertainty over what lies ahead—is also a profound shock to our normal state of mind.
It’s like the world has abruptly been hit by lightning and we’re now living in the midst of a vast forest fire—one that we can’t even see. And as these invisible flames rage on, we wonder how hot and how close the fire will burn. Of course, we should be as proactive as possible about protecting ourselves and our loved ones, our communities and our countries, the whole planet that we share. Still, no matter how proactive we are, there’s only so much that we can realistically do. Like a real forest fire, this fire will ultimately have its way. It will burn until it burns itself out. It will leave our world scorched and smoking, at a scale that may be absolutely heartbreaking...and yet, as in nature, new life will again eventually grow from what remains.
So, yes, let’s do what we can at this time—and that certainly includes making the most of any additional opportunity we might have to spend time with our children. By doing so, we’ll not only be deepening our bonds with them—particularly at a disorienting time when they likely need us most—we’ll be advancing their language development, too. When the smoke finally clears, and when new life emerges, they’ll then be better off in both ways.
How are you and your family doing? What are you experiencing and how are you coping? Please feel free to post anything you like in this thread. Perhaps it can serve as a helpful outpost for expressing thoughts and feelings, and exchanging support and encouragement, as this worldwide community of parents undergoes a global crisis now confronting us all. Stay safe and strong, everyone!
